Europe’s southernmost large city, and also the one with the mildest winters, Málaga on the Costa del Sol is an ideal holiday destination with something for everyone. Founded by the Phoenicians, it’s one Spain’s oldest cities, and was one of the last to be reconquered by the Christians from the Moors, and the legacies of all these different cultures can still be found in the historic centre.
Must-see sights include the Moorish palace-fortress, the Alcazaba, Gibralfaro Castle, the Roman Amphitheatre and the Picasso Museum (Picasso was born here), as well as an astonishing number of other museums of just about everything. When you’ve had enough culture visit the beaches, the beautiful parks and gardens, and the newly redeveloped harbour and marina complex.
There’s also a vibrant and eclectic restaurant and tapas bar scene that includes some of the best new places in Spain.
