The Macarena district is one of Seville's most authentic and colourful neighbourhoods and is full of local character, perhaps thanks to it's working-class roots. It's name may derive from Bab-al-Makrin - the Arab name for the arched city gateway still standing today; or possibly even from Roman times, after Macarius, a wealthy patrician said to have a lot of land in the district.
Situated in the northern part of the historic centre, the neighbourhood still preserves a large stretch of the city walls, which were begun by Julius Caesar and then extended under Moorish rule. It is home to the venerated Virgen de la Macarena, named after the neighbourhood, in the Basilica of the same name.
There is no shortage of places to eat in the Alameda, but this is one of the best. Lots of seasonal fresh food, and a little patio that's perfect for those summer evenings.

Now with more tapas options as well as the larger plates, the ConTenedor (with fork) is an eclectically decorated open dining space complete with chalboard menu, and with the kitchen and the morning's market purchases in full view. Cultural atmosphere and creative cuisine. Duck rice is definitly a must have. Ask for the cuisine chef Ignacio.

An unpretentious little bar with excellent quality tapas at reasonable prices, including some innovative dishes alongside the more traditional ones, and a better than average wine list.

Kiosco Hombre de Piedra
As its name says, this is not a regular restaurant, but a kiosk in the Alameda square. The food, however, is much better than you might expect from this type of establishment, and the location is ideal for having some tapas al fresco.
Address: Alameda de Hercules, s/n (close to the marble columns at the end nearest the centre).
Taberna Pasos Largos
This tapas bar is quite new, but has a traditional look and feel, as well as traditional food. From the bar you have a good view of the open kitchen. They specialize in products from Huelva province, where the owner is from.
Address: Feria, 115
Our favourite "food market bar", is tucked in between the calle Feria market hall and the Omnium Sanctorum church. It's only open for lunch, approx. 12 to 4 pm, at the end of the market day. The tapas are super fresh - the food comes directly from the market stands! Note this is not a restaurant; it's an outdoor terrace and is self-service.
Address: Feria Market
The Alameda de Hércules is a large open space, lined with trees and terrace bars. The wide space and a small play-ground area means it's popular with young families during the day. In the evening - and late into the night - the bars and terraces become packed out with those seeking after-hours entertainment. The Alameda attracts all kinds of Sevillians, from the relatively conservative to the more alternative!
There are also a few clubs for those wishing to prolong the night's festivities dotted around the Alameda and just beyond, which stay open until dawn.
Café Jazz Naima
The best Jazz club in the area.
Address: Trajano, 47
Coffee, cakes, pastries. Drinks at night. Mojitos y combinados en un bar de diseño. Buena música.

The best cakes around.

Seville "underground". A funny place. Open until very late.

La Caja Negra
Live music. Flamenco, jazz, etc.
Address: Fresa, 15
Small and inviting wine bar. Ask for the owner Pepa.
Address: Peral, 2
Medium sized discounter supermarket. Our recommendation for the "regular" groceries. (If you want a larger choice, go to the supermarket in the basement of the El Corte Inglés department store, on Plaza del Duque.)
Small, but very convenient long opening hours, even on Sundays! Mon-Sat, 9:30-15:00 and 17:30-22:30. Sun, 11:00-22:30.
Mercado Calle Feria
One of the oldest municipal food markets in Seville. Worthwhile seeing even without buying. Opens only in the morning until approx. 2pm, Mon-Sat.
