Carnero | Charming apartment with balcony views of the Alhambra

Located in the lower AlbaicĂn quarter next to Plaza Nueva, by the Darro River and just opposite the Alhambra Palace, this attractive apartment offers modern comfort and design combined with traditional architectural features.

This large, one-bedroom apartment features a south-facing balcony, which provides magnificent views over the red fortress, and is in a XVII century "casa palacio" with a plant-filled inner courtyard. The house was totally renovated in 2007. Exposed wooden beams and wood flooring throughout give rustic charm and a welcoming feel.

The ample living-dining area is brightly lit by two large windows overlooking the roof-tops of the old Moorish citadel. It is equipped with sofa, armchair and flat-screen TV. There is a dining table with chairs. The modern kitchen is fully-equipped for self-catering and includes a concealed dish-washer and washing machine.

The entrance hall leads to the bathroom with shower. Beyond is the bright bedroom with a double bed. Two sets of french windows open onto the sun-filled balcony, which can fit two chairs, making it an ideal place to relax while enjoying city views of Granada and the majestic Alhambra.

Location of apartment Carnero

Location of apartment AlbaicĂn

The Albaicín is a colourful and charming traditional neighbourhood set in the very heart of Granada. Made up of a network of winding streets and small squares rising up on a hill facing the Alhambra, the area is bordered by the Darro River and by the commercial centre of the city.

Once the site of the Moorish citadel, the Alcazaba, the area still retains a sense of its past in its architecture - many of the churches were built on the foundations of mosques. Today, parts of the Albaicín have taken on a distinctly North African feel with many tearooms and small shops selling Morroccan goods.

Wander through the streets and you'll find wonderful views, a wide variety of restaurants and many terrace bars - where you get a free tapa with your drink as is the custom in Granada.  For the best view in town, head for the lively Mirador de San Nicolás where you can contemplate the whole of the Alhambra with the peaks of Sierra Nevada as a backdrop. As the poet said, "Give him charity, girl, as there is nothing worse in life than being blind in Granada"!

  • View of the Alhambra from the Mirador de San Nicolás
  • Casa de Castril, the archaeological museum
  • Arab Baths - both historic remains and a modern version
  • Churches and Moorish city gates

Review for a stay in Oct 2016 - Jacqueline, Benicia (United States)

We enjoyed our stay in this apartment with a lot of character. The roof terrace was fabulous for views of Granada and the Alhambra. Our only complaint was the lack of a coffee pot. What was available was a stainless steel 1 cup pot that you had to put on the stove. It was then too hot to make another cup of coffee right away. The apartment is in a great central, quaint location. It is also very quiet in the bedroom, although you hear some noise in the living room from the apartment above.

"Just beautiful!"

Review for a stay in Jul 2016 - Anonymous, Leeds (United Kingdom)

My husband and I stayed here recently as part of our honeymoon and the apartment was absolutely perfect. The location is fantastic -- in the lower AlbaicĂn part of the town, close to Plaza Santa Ana and Plaza Nueva (a lovely area with plenty of bars, cafes and street performances), only a short stroll into the heart of the newer parts of the city, and with a gorgeous balcony looking out at the Alhambra.
The view from the balcony is stunning (exactly as depicted in the pictures) and it was wonderful to sit out overlooking the Alhambra while birds (I think they were swifts) swooped around as the sun set.
The apartment is very well equipped and beautifully decorated with interesting bits of artwork and wooden beams across the ceiling. It was a really treat to stay somewhere with so much character. I read in reviews before arriving that the bathroom is small and this is true, but in absolutely no way had a negative impact on our stay. It may not be big, but everything worked really well and there were plenty of soft (and huge!) towels provided.

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone I know who is planning on visiting Granada.

"Great location in the Albayzin quarter "

Review for a stay in Jun 2016 - Pamela, Houston (USA )

This apartment is very well located and an easy walk from Santa Ana. For the most part, it is quiet. This neighborhood has a lot going on but there is no big source of noise except for the convent bells in the morning which can be heard all over the neighborhood. The apartment itself is very well stocked. We had everything we could possisibly have needed for our 7 night stay. The apartment was immaculate when we arrived. Linens and towels were good quality. The bed is very comfortable and the balcony off the bedroom allows for great ventilation. It is roomy and is well laid out with good separation of the bedroom and the main living area. If there is a downside to this apartment, it would be the size of the bathroom as it is small. That being said, it is modern and everything works well. Be warned that there are 2 flights of kind of steep stairs up to the apartment. Communication with both veoapartments and the apartment manager Paula was easy and efficient. We had the manager's direct number to call if we had any problems or questions. Internet was good.

"Excellent service, stay and location for the apartment"

Review for a stay in May 2016 - Anonymous, Atlanta (United States)

Rented this apartment and have no regrets. We worked with Paula Prieto and she was great. Our transportation into Granada was delayed and Paula waited for us at our designated meeting place and walked us to the apartment. The space was clean and well appointed, you really could not want for anything. We only stayed two nights and did not use any of the appliances but if you were staying for longer you would not need anything. Bed slept great too! The location is perfect for walking Granada and is easy to get a taxi. Rent this place!

"What a VIEW........!"

Review for a stay in Mar 2016 - Peter, Rio Rancho (USA)

This apartments location right in the Albayzin neighborhood and the view of Alhambra are reasons enough to rent this spacious place. The comfortable bed, high quality linen, towels, washing machine and sitting on the terrace with wine watching the sun set on the Alhambra where just icing on the cake. The only draw back, and one not worth skipping this place, is the really small bathroom. The slow draining shower is a yoga workout just getting into it, don't drop the soap!

Veoapartment's reply: Thank you very much for your comments. We're sorry about the shower. The draining problem has been fixed.

"Dream Apartment"

Review for a stay in Oct 2015 - Cynthia, Calgary (Canada)

The Carnero apartment was in the most perfect location with the most perfect views, not only of the Alhambra but also over all of the rooftops of the Albaycin. The apartment had very high end finishing a and was decorated immaculately - modern while retaining all of the rustic touches like the wooden ceiling beams. We felt very lucky to have stayed there.

"The stay at Carnero was lovely."

Review for a stay in May 2015 - Kathy, Sebastopol (USA)

The apartment had everything you would want for a comfortable stay. The location was excellent. The couch that turns into a bed was surprisingly comfortable. Definitely need more pillows in the apartment and two sets of keys would have helped immensely. Having to coordinate meeting times to get back into the apartment was a problem. Everything else was great.

In the ratings area, the reason I put "good" for value instead of excellent was due to the fact that we rented an excellently located, two bedroom/two bath (large showers) apartment in Madrid for 90 Euro a night.

Owner's reply Thanks for your nice comments. We were not aware you'd need to use the sofa-bed, otherwise of course we'd have provided more pillows, as well as a second set of keys upon request. Sorry for the inconveniences caused. (Gerardo, May 2015)

"Wonderful aprtment, Great location, Nice people"

Review for a stay in Mar 2015 - Steven, Victoria (CANADA)

We stayed here in Granada in March, 2015. The neighborhood is quiet and central. It's also a World Heritage site as it is a remnant of the core of Moorish, medieval Granada. The view looking up at the Alhambra is amazing, especially at night. You can walk to the Alhambra in 20 minutes (uphill but in the shade...).
The best grocery shopping we found is at El Corte Ingles on Carrera de la Virgen, about 15 minutes walk.
Excellent apartment. We'll be back.

The apartment was HUGE and well-appointed/equipped. The view was stunning. The location was excellent. All in all, PERFECT. Would definitely book again. The only minor hiccup was the key exchange was a little difficult without a cell phone, but we made it work!

"Fantastic apartment with great view"

Review for a stay in Dec 2014 - Anonymous, Shaw, Oldham (United Kingdom)

It's a great little apartment, located within a restored old building right near Plaza Nueva with easy walk to the Alhambra. As soon as you enter the street and building you get to appreciate the history and character of Granada. The apartment is newly modernized, very new inside and decorated with great style. We stayed in December so was pleased to find electric radiator (one each in hallway and living room), AC (one each in bedroom and living room) and a heat fan in the bathroom, as Granada in winter can get very cold at night. The furnishing of the apartment is really tasteful and the linen and bedding are of good quality. The kitchen is small but had all the amenities needed. The best part of the apartment is the fact it is full of natural light and the view from the bedroom balcony and the living room windows are both stunning. From the apartment it was very easy to get to Granada city centre and even the tapas bars along Calle Navas/Calle del Rosario.

A few things potential guests may need to know:
The apartment is located at the bottom of the Albaicin and although very easy to reach from Plaza Nueva, it does require climbing a few sets of steps up narrow cobbled streets. This part of Granada is not easy for people with lots of big suitcases. The building itself does not have a lift and the apartment is on the second floor (third floor if you are from the US).
The hot water tank in the apartment must be very small because each time we had a shower the hot water was only enough to last for one person (a fairly quick shower for one). Afterwards you would have to wait for at least 30 min for the water to warm up again. So if you are planning to have a shower before you go out or have one at the end of the night, make sure you leave plenty of time or the others may had to jump out of a cold shower!
The bathroom is very small (although very modern and nicely furnished). To get into the shower cubical you would have to almost climb over the toilet. Be warned. (I wear XS/XXS and my husband wears UK size M).
There is not much storage space in the bedroom. There is more storage for clothes in the living room if you need. It was fine for us as we were only there for 3 days and did not fully unpack.

Overall it was a great apartment for two persons' short stay.

After dragging luggage from the carpark, opening the door to this apartment and walking in just makes you feel good. The arrival/pickup was excellent. The apartment is carefully decorated, very clean, spacious and has a wonderful view of the Alhambra from a small balcony. It is only for physically able people as there is a climb up two flights of stairs. Bathroom is small but tastefully done and functional. The only bad thing about Granada was the 25euro per day parking charge which is over-the-top. Don't miss Mercado San Agustin at lunchtime on a Saturday.

We absolutely loved staying at Apartment Carnero! This charming apartment was above and beyond what we'd expect from a vacation rental: it was clean, well appointed with modern appliances and bathroom, and comfortable. But the lovely furnishings, décor and artwork made the apartment really special. We were impressed with how much character the apartment had! The view of the Alhambra from the balcony is another bonus! Great location, perfect apartment.

"Charming modern apartment in the heart of historic Albayzin "

Review for a stay in Jul 2014 - Anonymous, LONDON (United Kingdom)

This is a lovely, modern apartment in a great location in the lower Albayzin district, meaning it offers stunning views over the area and onto the Alhambra (especially from the roof terrace), yet you don't have to climb high up the hill to reach it and you can get pretty much anywhere in the historic part of Granada on foot. The pictures will show you the rest - it's very comfortable and well equipped, highly recommended!

For us it was perfect and romantic. We walked everywhere from here very easily. The stairs to the apartment may be too much for some. The bathroom and bedroom are small but the bed is very comfortable. Living room has plenty of space and well -equipped with kettle, coffee maker, dishwashing tablets and washing detergent. Only thing missing was shampoo. It was lovely to be met by Paola and shown to the apartment.

Beautiful spacious apartment with a classy and very high quality interior in a traditional building in a very quiet area close everything you will want to see in Granada. Excellent bed and bedding, extremely comfortable living room and very well equipped kitchen. Tight squeeze in the bathroom but more than made up for by the overall presentation of the apartment. Be aware the apartment is approached by a short climb up a stepped street and then 2 flights of stairs...but well worth it for the views.

We stayed here as part of a two month trip across Spain, and this was by far my favorite apartment we have stayed in to date. Beautiful, well located, great view, quiet, well appointed with extra linens and an extremely well stocked kitchen. Absolutely super and a great value - based on what we have experienced elsewhere, they could easily charge more.
Please note that people who can't handle lots of stairs should look elsewhere and the shower is very tiny (could be an issue for people of large stature).

Exellent apartment in an old area of Granada. History everywhere. Nicely equipped. As it is in an ancient part of town, there are many stairs and no nearby parking. Taxi's can get you almost to within a block, but this adds to the ambiance of the place. No traffic noise! Views!!

"Beautiful and comfortable apartment in the centre of Granada with a spectacular view"

Review for a stay in Apr 2013 - Anonymous, Haarlem (Netherlands)

The charming and spacious apartment is very comfortable and well provided with all household necessities.
The bathroom is rather small, but you quickly get accustomed to that.
The view is spectacular and the apartment is very well situated.
We were very pleased with the support we got, when it turned out that the drain of the shower was blocked, the problem being sorted out within a couple of hours.
The only point of critique is the mattress that is too short and too hard for our taste (maybe twin beds would have been better).

The apartment is at a top spot, very central, amazing views on the Alhambra and town. The interior is first class, well designed providing a great atmosphere. Good quality furniture, cupboards and equipment, all very modern. The only thing missing was a hairdryer. The bathroom is tiny and the showers requires some acrobatics to get into it, but this didn't bother us a bit. We would recommend it to anybody, We appreciated the attention of the owners and the fresh flowers that were in the apartment when we arrived.

Owner's reply: Thank you very much for your kind feedback. We do provide now a hairdryer, as suggested. Thank you for helping us to improve our services. Best regards.

"Lovely apartment in Granada"

Review for a stay in Jul 2012 - Anonymous, Amsterdam (Holanda)

We were delighted with the Carnero apartment. It does not look like a rental at all. I imagine that this was the private place of an architect or conductor or such, who moved out temporarily. Lovely design, beautiful rugs and artwork, excellent airco, top quality fridge, washer, towels etc.
It is located in a quiet alley in the heart of the historic centre. We felt like authentic Granadinos staying there.
1. you need to walk quite a bit of stairs, first outside in the alley to get to the place, and then inside to get to the top floor
2. the bathroom is rather tight
Hint: the neigbours let us unto the rooftop terrace. Much larger than the balcony, lovely sight of Granada and the stars.
